Behaviour Change in your World

BehaviourWorks

We are a founding partner of BehaviourWorks Australia, along with the Environmental Protection Authority, Victoria.

BehaviourWorks is a behaviour change initiative led by the substantial academic and research resources of Monash University, including the Monash Sustainability Institute.

It combines the academic learning of the university with the on-the-ground experiential learning of the BehaviourWorks partners.

Understanding neuroscience (broadly speaking the study of the nervous system) and how the brain’s reaction to stimulus impacts our behaviours is being increasingly investigated. Understanding the triggers that can result in predictable outcomes is becoming the source of some considerable debate.

The Shannon Company has over recent years had exposure to this emerging field with one of our clients commissioning neuro-based research that ultimately led to the refinement of an existing already successful commercial.

In this linked BBC podcast, Matthew Taylor (Chief Executive of the Royal Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce -  RSA and former Chief Adviser on Political Strategy to British Prime Minister Tony Blair) overviews the debate with numerous examples of the role of neuroscience in politics and other decision-making environments. This is the third part of a three part series. The other parts can be accessed in this program of BBC podcasts.

At The Shannon Company we’re constantly trying to unlock the mysteries behind what makes people behave the way they do. And how can  information be presented in a way that helps persuade and encourage people to change how they do things.

In a recent article featured in ‘The Conversation’, the question was asked “Why do people reject science?”, with links drawn to climate change scepticism. Sometimes credible facts alone are not enough. How they’re presented and who presents them  can be equally important. Themes described in this article are also featured in recent posts at “Sceptical Science”.

Enjoy the insights!
